Air Freshener Alternatives for a Healthier Home
October 9, 2024
Keep your home healthy and smelling fresh with safer air freshener alternatives.
Everyone loves a fresh-smelling home—but not at the cost of their health. While traditional air fresheners (nice as they may smell) are packed with harmful chemicals that we breathe in each day, there are plenty of methods that are simple and safe for the entire family—even your furry friends!
The Hidden Toxins in Conventional Air Fresheners
Many fresheners on the market contain VOCs, i.e. volatile organic compounds, like formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene. These are widely known to cause respiratory issues, allergies, and other serious health issues. On top of that, phthalates in synthetic fragrances can hurt hormones and affect reproductive health and aerosol sprays release ozone-compromising particles.
The Safer Choices
Activated Charcoal Air Purifiers
Activated charcoal has gained popularity as a natural air purifier, and for good reason. This naturally porous material acts like a long-lasting magnet for odors, harmful chemicals, and excess moisture from the air. Placing activated charcoal air purifiers strategically around your home can effectively neutralize unwanted smells without introducing any synthetic fragrances.
Houseplants as Natural Air Purifiers
More often than not, nature does it better. Our favorite air purifiers are houseplants! Not only do they neutralize potentially toxic air quality, they also contribute to general mental health and the overall look of your home. Snake plants (or Dracaena trifasciata) specifically are highly effective air purifiers, but a variety of greenery in your space should do the trick.
Homemade Citrus Peel Sprays
For those of you who prefer an actual scent, you can try making your own easy and eco-friendly air freshener using citrus peels! Simply collect peels from oranges or lemons, soak them in water (you can add a few drops of essential oils for stronger scent—just avoid this with pets in the house!), and pour into a spray bottle. A quick spritz will get rid of unpleasant odors, leaving just a fresh, bright, and totally natural scent behind.
