Spring cleaning is the perfect time to update your laundry routine and get a fresh start for the season! Beyond just organizing, a few simple laundry hacks can help you work faster, get clothes cleaner, and keep your machines functioning for longer. It’s also easier than it may seem—here are some easy tips for refreshing your laundry routine from start to finish.
Over time, your washing machine itself can get dirty. It can collect detergent residue, dirt, and even mold, impacting how well and how efficiently it cleans. To remedy this, simply give it a deep clean.
Start by running a hot water cycle without any clothes in it. Add two cups of vinegar to help break down any buildup and sanitize the drum. Then, check the rubber gasket around the door for any built-up moisture and grime. Mix vinegar and baking soda to create a paste, and scrub the gasket well.
Remove your detergent dispenser if possible and soak it in warm, soapy water. Then, gently scrub it to remove any leftover residue.
A clogged dryer vent can slow down drying (and is also a serious fire risk). To keep lint from building up and to keep your dryer functioning properly, follow these easy steps.
After regular loads, be sure to manually remove lint from your lint trap.
Use a vacuum attachment or a long brush to clean the lint trap slot, getting rid of any leftover debris that isn't on the trap itself.
Check the dryer vent hose often for blockages. You can typically detach it from the dryer and vacuum the inside. If you see any waxy buildup on the lint screen (usually from dryer sheets) gently clean it with mild dish soap and a soft brush.
Simply transforming your laundry area into a neat space can help make laundry days easier. Start by cleaning out old or unused laundry products. Use baskets, bins, or shelves to keep similar items together. You might also want to add wall-mounted shelves or over-the-door organizers to use vertical space better, especially if your laundry room is small. Place the items you use most, like detergent and stain remover, where they are easy to reach. Store the items you don't use as frequently on higher shelves.
Embrace a more eco-conscious laundry routine by incorporating practices that are gentle on both your clothes and the environment. Start by opting for cold water washes whenever possible, as this simple switch significantly reduces energy consumption without sacrificing cleaning power. Switching to wool dryer balls is another effective way to reduce drying time and eliminate the need for dryer sheets, which often contain microplastics. Additionally, opt for mild, eco-friendly detergents that are free of harsh chemicals and fragrances, minimizing your impact on the environment and preventing skin irritations.
During spring cleaning, focus on giving your washing machine a good cleaning to remove any buildup. It's best to deep clean your washing machine every three months. This helps prevent mold and residue buildup and keeps it working well. By taking care of it regularly, you can enjoy fresh laundry and extend the life of your appliance.
